Ghetto of Vișeu de Sus (Maramureș County)
In this ghetto, 12,000 Jews from Vișeu de Sus, Vișeu de Jos, Borșa, Leordina, Moisei, Petrova, Poienile de Munte and from the rural parts of the county were concentrated. Commander of the ghetto was Gendarme Commander Ágyi Zoltán. The Romanians brought the Jews food in secret, in some cases for a cost, but often without asking for money. If caught, they were shot.
The gendarmes resorted to the maltreatment, robbing and even execution of those who, for health reasons, could not manage the journey to the ghetto. Such a case is that of Davidovitz, a Jew from Dragomirești. In addition, escape from the ghetto was punishable by shooting. A documented case is that of Indig Șmil and Indig Paises, who escaped from the ghetto and hid with the help of a citizen in Bârsana. But they were discovered by gendarmes Pașcan Florea, Biro János and Varga György and executed on the spot.
The deportation of the Jews from Vișeu de Sus to Auschwitz took place in 4 transports on 19, 21, 23 and 25 May 1944.
