Operational zones of dejewification in Hungary

In order to implement the plan of ghettoisation and deportation of the Jews, the Hungarian authorities divided Hungary into six operational zones. They were each assigned one or two gendarmerie districts:

  • Zone I. Carpathian Ruthenia and northeastern Hungary – Gendarmerie District VIII (Košice/Kassa)
  • Zone II. Northern Transylvania – Gendarmerie District IX (Cluj) and Gendarmerie District X (Târgu Mureș)
  • Zone III. Northern Hungary from Košice/Kassa to the German border – Gendarmerie District II (Székesfehérvár) and Gendarmerie District VII (Miskolc)
  • Zone IV. Southern Hungary to the east of the Danube – Gendarmerie District V (Szeged) and Gendarmerie District VI (Debrecen)
  • Zone V. Southwestern Hungary to the west of the Danube – Gendarmerie District III (Szombathely) and Gendarmerie District IV (Pécs)
  • Zone VI. Budapest and the surrounding area – Gendarmerie District I (Budapest)

Most of northern Transylvania was identified as operational Zone II (the counties of Satu Mare, Bihor, Sălaj, Cluj, Someș, Bistrița-Năsăud, Mureș-Turda, Trei Scaune). Following its annexation to Carpathian Ruthenia after a conference held in Munkács (12 April 1944), the Maramureș County was incorporated into operational Zone I.
