The concentration camp of Gherla (Someș County)
The camp in Gherla was located near the brick factory at the edge of town. About 1600 Jews, of whom 400 were from Gherla, and the rest from the surrounding communities, were concentrated there. The camp commander was Iványi András, the local chief of police.
Most of the Jews interned in Gherla were left to sleep under the open sky, since the barracks near the brick factory were insufficient in number. There was no drinking water, and prisoners were forced to drink from puddles to quench their thirst. There were also no places for physiological needs, and the muddy and wet terrain caused many to become ill (especially children and women).
The prisoners were transferred to the Cluj camp on 18 May 1944.
